Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) – Database
Job Title: Reliability Engineer (SRE) – Database
Location: Remote, USA & Canada
Compensation Range: $120,000 - $150,000 USD
Job Summary:
We’re seeking a Site Reliability Engineer with hands-on experience in managing and optimizing SQL and NoSQL database infrastructure at scale. This mid-level role is ideal for someone who thrives in high-impact environments, brings a proactive mindset to reliability challenges, and can contribute meaningfully to automation, observability, and incident response. You’ll work across engineering, DevOps, and data teams to ensure our database systems are resilient, performant, and secure — while continuously improving our infrastructure through code
Key Responsibilities:
Database Reliability & Performance
Maintain and optimize SQL and NoSQL database systems (e.g., Postgres, MongoDB) that support mission-critical applications. Drive improvements in availability, latency, and scalability.
Automation & Infrastructure as Code
Design and implement automation for database provisioning, configuration, and maintenance using Python, Bash, and tools like Terraform or Ansible.
Monitoring & Observability
Own the setup and refinement of monitoring systems (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog) to ensure visibility into database health, performance, and anomalies.
Incident Management & Root Cause Analysis
Lead or contribute to on-call rotations, triage production issues, and perform post-incident reviews to drive long-term reliability improvements.
Performance Tuning & Query Optimization
Analyze slow queries, indexing strategies, and schema design to improve database efficiency and throughput.
Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement
Partner with software engineers, data engineers, and DevOps to align database architecture with application needs and business goals.
Backup, Recovery & Disaster Readiness
Implement and validate robust backup and recovery strategies. Contribute to business continuity planning and testing.
Security & Compliance
Enforce database security policies, access controls, and data protection best practices in alignment with regulatory requirements.
Technical Expertise
Solid experience with relational and NoSQL databases (e.g., Postgres, SQL Server, MongoDB). Comfortable navigating query optimization, replication, and failover strategies.
Scripting & Automation
Proficient in Python, Bash, or similar scripting languages. Experience with CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure-as-code tools.
Cloud & DevOps Familiarity
Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and container orchestration tools (Docker, Kubernetes).
Problem Solving & Ownership
Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex systems independently and drive resolution across teams.
Communication & Collaboration
Strong written and verbal communication skills. Able to influence and align stakeholders across engineering and operations.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field — or equivalent practical experience.
5+ years in SRE, DevOps, or infrastructure engineering roles, with direct experience supporting production database systems.
Certifications in cloud, database, or DevOps technologies are a plus.
What We Offer
Competitive compensation and benefits package.
A remote-first, collaborative culture that values ownership and continuous learning.
Opportunities to lead initiatives and grow into senior engineering roles.
Challenging, high-impact projects that blend software engineering and operations.
